Valley of Glory Memorial Complex
The front line passed here, and fierce fighting was going on, The battle began in July 1941. The Gebirgsjäger Corps of General Dietl was to leap the river and proceed towards Murmansk across the tundra, but was repelled at the price of many solders’ lives. According to the wartime archives, some two thousand soldiers – but actually many more – fell in the Valley of Glory.
The pivotal battle was fought on 8 September 1941. The enemy had gathered its strength and launched an attack, but the Russian soldiers forced them to turn back and assume the defensive.
