Stela to Soldiers of the 368th Infantry Division
After a truce was concluded with Finland, the division was relocated to the Kola Peninsula and included in the 14th Army to take part in the Petsamo-Kirkenes Offensive Operation. Finland was conceding the old Russian town of Pechenga (Petsamo) to the Soviet Union, but the nickel mines of Pechenga were being defended by German troops. On 15 October 1944, after fierce fighting, they were recaptured from the Nazis with the 368th division’s assistance. After crossing the Norwegian border, the division took part in the liberation of Kirkenes and was named Pechenga Division on that same day.
