Abandoned anti-aircraft defence unit
The so-called ‘Globe’, located near the former battalion of an AAD missile brigade, was a popular destination for tourists heading for the Sredny and Rybachy Peninsulae. The globe-shaped building nicknamed ‘Knob’ was a good reference point in the forest, discernible at ten kilometres’ distance.
The Globe used to monitor the skies on the Norwegian side. Now the ‘enigmatic’ radomes have been replaced by long-range radar stations designed to detect both aircraft and space vehicles, including ballistic and cruise missiles.
