Monument to the Reconnaissance Men on Cape Krestovy

A monument to the reconnaissance men led by Captain Ivan Pavlovich Barchenko-Yemelyanov who destroyed a large German stronghold on Cape Krestovy to secure the success of the Petsamo-Kirkenes operation.

Captain I.P. Barchenko-Yemelyanov, Commander of the Reconnaissance Unit of the Northern Defended Area, was tasked with capturing the enemy’s battery and strongpoint on Cape Krestovy to support a forcible entry operation at the Liinahamari port. In the early morning hours of 12 October 1944, the troop landed on the coast of the Malaya Volokovaya Bay occupied by the enemy. On 12 October 1944 his team fulfilled the task after a 30-kilometre march, even though outnumbered by the enemy’s garrison and reinforcements.
